<b>236. ISAAC HULL</b> (1773 - 1843) American naval officer who commanded the Constitution in its victory over the British warship Guerriere in the War of 1812. L.S. 1p. 4to., "<i>Navy Yard, Washington</i>", Jan. 15, 1830 to Midshipman W.E. Hant noting the enclosure of <i>"...a copy of a letter I wrote to the secretary of the Navy, immediately after the arrival of the United States at New York; and hope the letter will be satisfactory to the Board, and that you will pass the Examination with honor to yourself and the Service...</i>". Burnt at left and bottom margins resulting in chipping with slight loss, otherwise very good. Together with three documents relative to the U.S.S. Constitution, including a partly printed D.S. 1vo. oblong 8vo., Boston, Aug. 13, 1798, a receipt for a payment of $126 for <i>"...Sundry Hogsheads for Bread & Cooperage of Bread for the United States Frigate Constitution...</i>"; <b>ALEXANDER S. WADSWORTH</b> (d. 1851), 2nd. Lieutenant on the Constitution in the action with the Guerriere, A.L.S. 1p. 12mo., Dec. 3, 1841 paying a bill. Small tear with tiny loss; partial manuscript letter (bottom missing), 2pp. 4to., Philadelphia, Aug. 14, 1798 mentioning the court-martial of one <i>"...Ensign Samuel Parnele...His charges were many and various...The law annexes to the penalty of fraud that the sentence shall be published in the newspapers...Sam was a boy of mischief - he is a man of knavery...</i>".
