Gouache on paper, framed. Featuring sweeping landscape. Signed and attr. Hugo Scheiber (Hungarian, 1873-1950) on the lower right corner. 26 x 36 cm (11.0 x 14.1 inches). Born in Hungary, Scheiber was a leading Expressionist painter who exhibited frequently at the famous Der Sturm Gallery in Berlin.  He was also strongly influenced by Italian Futurist founder Marinetti and exhibited at the famous Futurism exhibition held in Rome in 1933. He was also a favorite of Katherine Dreier who invited him to exhibit at the New York exhibition of the Societe Anonyme in 1926. Scheiber is known for his use of strong colors and stylized use of geometric figures and  for his portrayals of cafe and cabaret life. This painting in particular has a strong deco feel to it.  His work has been shown in numerous retrospectives just prior to and since his death. PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario estate
