<td width="100%">
Outstanding majolica centerpiece, made 19th century by Hugo Lonitz, Germany. Very exciting, on a par with Minton and George Jones. 15 1/2 inches wide and 11 3/4inches high. Hugo Lonitz made top quality majolica during the late 19th century. His work is very rare, especially in the USA. It is described in Dr. D. Michael Murray's book on European Majolica in highly complementary terms. Raised oval, partially domed base on 4 scrolling feet decorated with oak leaves. Fluted tuquoise meets rich brown and mustard yellow. Neck is entirely hidden by turquoise & mustard yellow fans of peackock feather design. The oval centerpiece has a rich cobalt blue ground. It is swathed in swags of flowers and foliage. Front and back have marvellous Satyr head masks: high cheeks, long ears, scrolling horns and curls of hair and beard. The sides are wonderful mastheads - nude torsos of women with blond Grecian hairstyles and wings with fabulous detail and feathers. The turquoise interior was obviously used for plants and has colour loss caused by the water. That is the only fault/damage of the entire piece, which is otherwise in MINT condition. Underneath is the impressed oval mark of Hugo Lonitz with two fish in opposite directions. Also impressed 1499 and handwritten 14.
