<td width="100%">
Huge piece of Chinese pate sur pate done on celadon. European cermaic firms got their inspiration for pate sur pate (or "paste on paste") from the Chinese.
<p>
The immediate inspiration for pate sur-pate was in fact provided by none of the European sources. The technique developed at Sevres followed speculation about the method used to produce the raised white flowers on a Chinese celadon vase the ceramics museum there These flowers were wrongly thought to be translucent, and trials were carried out to produce a similar decoration . Success was achieved in 1849 when a sucrier decorated with raised insects ornaments emerged from the kiln with the celadon ground colour clearly visible through the decoration.
<p>
Huge in size at 20" across and 8" deep. Massively heavy probably 15 lbs or more. Condition is excellent with just a small repaired rim chip to report. Circa 1800.
