Here are 3 beautiful early church panels or a square paneled Triptych in a naïve style, hand carved in sunken relief (judging by frame level), decorated with many colours of (polychrome) paint. They are darker in normal light than in the pictures. Since they came from a private collection in Eastern Germany, I would say they may originally be from Eastern Europe maybe southern Poland or Bohemia. The trefoils in the corners indicate a Late Gothic influence, and since the panels depict three scenes from the resurrection of Christ, I believe they must surely coincide with the greatest period of the Mystery and Passion plays so popular in late medieval Europe. Because of this, I would tentatively place them at the end of the 16th century or early 17th. They show, respectively, Christ in the tomb, the visitation of the Angels and the weeping women. All three are in outstanding condition. They have a few layers of paint, and in places red and white show through the top layer, so I would say some sort of primer or gesso went on the wood before they were painted. Restoration is not my forte but I would say that with some professional attention and care the colours should come up much brighter if the buyer so chooses. That said, the present condition is lovely and the piece would grace any collection as-is. The fixings are more recent and not from the period and I am also a bit flummoxed by the glue, I have been trying to find out the types of early glue used in wood work, but one or two ...
