HSC: The Earliest Known Eddie Collins Athletic Aw
The Earliest Known Eddie Collins Athletic Award. Hailed for his tremendous foot speed (Collins is the only American League player to steal six bases in a single game, a feat he accomplished twice in a span of less than two weeks in 1912), it's only appropriate that the earliest documented athletic award issued to the Hall of Fame second baseman relates directly to his sprinting abilities. The attractive brooch dates from the 1904 Freshman-Sophomore Games at New York City's Columbia University, the Ivy League school also responsible for bringing a ballplayer named Gehrig into the spotlight. The artfully designed obverse, featuring the Columbia seal amidst enameled laurels gives way to the engraved text on verso reading "100 Yds. Dash 1904, E.T. Collins." At bottom is engraved "Solid Gold, Dieges & Clust, 25 John St." In a quarter century as a player in the Major Leagues, Cocky Collins earned four World Championship awards (and was cheated of a fifth as a member of the 1919 White Sox), and this 101-year old rarity from a seventeen-year old college freshman marks the absolute beginning of those winning ways. Light to moderate wear, displaying beautifully.
