Circa 1912 American League Owners and President Glass Plate Negative. Born under any other name, legendary baseball photographer George Burke would almost certainly have failed to achieve any substantial degree of notoriety. But when 1929 Chicago Cubs manager Joe McCarthy and catcher Gabby Hartnett wanted photographs of the players in street clothes, and placed a call to the old Cubs' team photographer, they made a fortuitous mistake. Meaning to contact Francis Burke, the Cubs called George instead, and the new Burke jumped at the chance to shoot at Wrigley. Soon he supplanted Francis as the official lensman for the Cubs and White Sox, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Offered here is a thrilling assortment of original negatives from Burke's famed Chicago studio. Those familiar with Burke's oeuvre will certainly understand what a great and rare opportunity it is to acquire what amounts to original artwork from this most famous of baseball photographers. Burke's portraits of the great pre-war Hall of Famers stand forever as some of the definitive photographic documentation of our National pastime.
