Circa 1900 Tom Sharkey Cabinet Photographs (2). "Sailor" Tom Sharkey was a tough, durable fighter during the era that proceeded John L. Sullivan's reign. He had a short stocky build that not only enabled him to deliver a powerful punch, but also gave him the ability to absorb a tremendous amount of punishment. Sharkey quickly moved up the ranks of the heavyweight division with a string of knockout victories and after several ring battles with the likes of Joe Choynski, Peter Maher, Bob Fitzsimmons and James J Corbett, he was awarded a shot at the title. His two epic ring wars with James J. Jeffries are legendary. Both times the fights went the distance, twenty and twenty-five rounds respectably, with Jeffries winning two close decisions. These two ring battles were so prominent that the two old warriors would later tour together on the vaudeville circuit, twenty years after their last fight, and draw sell out crowds. Offered in this lot are two fantastic cabinet photos of Sharkey. Both feature Sharkey in his prime. His cauliflower ear and ship tattoo are clearly evident. There is just a touch of edge wear and some light foxing. Both cards measure 5.25x7.25". LOA from Craig Hamilton/ JO Sports.
