HSC: Babe Ruth & Movie Stars Signed Baseball PSA/
1920's Babe Ruth & Silent Movie Stars Signed Baseball. This stunning Golden Age jewel is encrusted with silver screen legends and baseball diamond stars. While we may never know the exact circumstances that brought these top 1920's celebrities together on a single "Wilson American League Ball," we have worked in tandem with the highly knowledgeable Heritage Movie Poster division in an attempt to shed some light on the proceedings. We'll begin with our own expertise, noting the three baseball signatures present. Most immediately apparent is a gorgeous sweet spot signature from the Babe, to which he has added the date in his equally strong 8/10 black ink. Properly believing that too much is never enough, Ruth appears again, smaller this time but still bold and dark, on a side panel. Finally, his fellow Yankee and Hall of Famer Bob Meusel lends his star power in 9+/10 fountain pen. For the remainder of the participants in this fine collectible we defer to the Movie Poster division, which informs us that Ruth appeared in a famous film called "Speedy," the last silent movie directed by Harold Lloyd, one of the era's most acclaimed directors. The assumption that this is a relevant fact derives from the appearance of Lloyd's wife and silent movie actress Mildred Davis, and Walter Hiers, who appeared in the film. It's evident, however, that the ball made the Hollywood rounds beyond just the "Speedy" set, as various other entertainment personalities unaffiliated with that film are present as well. Most notable among them is actor Buster Keaton, who was one of the few men of the day who could rival the Babe for sheer celebrity stature. Another big-wig is Harry Cohn, head of Columbia Studios at the time. All those listed rate EX or better, as do the majority of the remaining signatures, though a few do dip a bit below that threshold. Overall the ball displays brilliantly though, and the four most important autographs--both Babes, the Meusel and the Keaton--are all in fabulous shape. A particularly intriguing piece blending two American passions: baseball and the movies. LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/ PSA DNA.
