1980 Aaron Pryor World Championship Ring Magazine Belt. Aaron Pryor, "The Hawk," was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 20, 1955. He began his boxing career at the age of thirteen and tore through the amateur ranks compiling a record of 204-16 before landing a spot as an alternate on the 1976 Olympic team. Pryor turned pro immediately after the Olympics and quickly established himself as one of the most formidable fighters in the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions. His domination earned him a shot at the legendary Junior Welterweight champion, Antonio Cervantes. The fight was held in Pryor's hometown on August 2, 1980. It was a one-sided affair from the start and Cervantes was finished in the fourth round. After winning the title Pryor continued his domination of the division making five successful defenses before his legendary confrontation with Alexis Arguello in 1982, a fight that was voted Fight Of The Decade by Ring Magazine. This ring war between these two great Champions lives on in boxing lore as one of the all time greatest battles. Pryor proved too much for the talented Arguello who was stopped in the fourteenth round. They rematched the next year and again Arguello was stopped, this time in ten rounds. Aaron Pryor has been elected to the Boxing Hall Of Fame and in 1999 he was voted by the Associated Press the Greatest Junior Welterweight of the Century. Presented here is the prestigious Ring Magazine World Championship Belt presented to Aaron Pryor for his victory in 1980 over Antonio Cervantes. The belt has a blue leather sash which connects at the rear with a brown leather belt. There is a large medal center plate which has the logo of The Ring (Magazine), two fighters and a globe and the inscription, "World Jr. Welterweight Champion Presented By Seagram's VO." At this time Seagram's was the endorser of the Ring Magazine Championship belts. On the reverse there is a buckle with the further inscription, "1981 Seagram's The Ring." The belt is in fine condition with only modest soiling and some wear to the brown leather from being worn by the champ. It is missing the cloth sash which once covered the blue leather sash. This incredible Championship belt is offered with a letter of authenticity from the Champion himself, Aaron Pryor, and a copy of Ring Magazine which shows Aaron Pryor wearing the belt. Heritage is proud to present this Championship belt as a first time offering at public sale. LOA from Craig Hamilton/ JO Sports.
