HSC: 1946 Joe Louis vs. Billy Conn Fight Film Pos
1946 Joe Louis vs. Billy Conn Fight Film Poster. Before entering the ring for his 1946 rematch with Billy Conn, reporters asked Louis how he would deal with that fighter's agility and elusiveness. In his reply, the Brown Bomber coined his most famous remark: "He can run but he can't hide." Banned from fighting professionally while in the military, Louis' first return to the prizefighting game after his discharge was the Conn rematch, and he proved he still had some real pop in his punch, flooring Conn for good in the eighth round. This gorgeous poster is often seen in smaller reproductions, but the large genuine article is particularly scarce. Compelling images of the two pugilists are interspersed with text that suggests the film version is "Better than a ringside seat." Stamp of the "National Screen Service Corp." can be found at lower left, and the poster displays magnificently with the only particularly noteworthy condition issues coming in the form of two horizontal creases where the rolled poster had been compressed at some point. Other scattered wrinkles and minor creases join the occasional dark spot or stray piece of ancient tape, as is to be expected for a piece of this vintage. One need only look to the photographs for this listing to see how little these issues affect eye appeal. The same could be said of the tack holes at the corners, and the six-inch tear at top that has been repaired with archival tape. This tape marks the only "restoration" of the piece, and we'll leave it to the winning bidder to decide if he wishes to go further with this process, as it would be a simple job for an expert to create the appearance of a Near Mint specimen. As it stands today, this specimen is surely among the finest of the few remaining examples already. Measures 40x60" on heavy poster stock.
