HSC: 1930's George Halas Signed Letter Archive PS
Mid-1930's George Halas Signed Letter Archive. Though it was Curly Lambeau who successful lured Francis "Zud" Schammel to his football team, the Bears' George Halas couldn't be accused of failing to try. Presented here are seven typed letters mailed to Schammel by the Hall of Fame coach. Six bear Halas' authentic signature at the close; the seventh is signed secretarially. All but one are on Chicago Bears letterhead, and only one is missing the original mailing envelope. The earliest letters attempt to convince Schammel to study medicine in Chicago, and that it would be possible to do so while playing for the Bears. The last letter, dated July 14, 1937, has the best content of all, as Halas writes, "I received your letter stating that you are going to play professional football. I don't know who told you that we were all set for next year but that [was] wrong as we can always use a good man. Anyway, the best of luck in your play with the Green Bay Packers, but I hope you don't go too good against us." One letter is missing the right border, lost when Schammel tore open an envelope, but the rest of the pages are in fine condition. All autographs are 10/10. A fascinating look into the early recruiting process of the National Football League. LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/ PSA DNA.
