HSC: 1930's Francis Zud Schammel Football Archi
1930's Francis "Zud" Schammel Football Correspondence Archive. Straight from the estate of this early University of Iowa and Green Bay Packers gridiron star comes a vast and intriguing assortment of letters sent to Zud by various football figures. Several letters request his services for professional play, typed on the letterhead of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Boston Braves, the Philadelphia Eagles (2), and the Pittsburgh Pirates (2). Each is signed by a team executive, and includes original mailing envelope. Also here are a congratulatory letter that once accompanied Schammel's Card of Merit for the All America Board of Football, and another noting his activity in Liberty's All-America Football Team for 1933. Four letters from the Chicago Tribune relate to Schammel's appearance in a charity match between the top college football players (of which Schammel was one) and the Chicago Bears. Various other artifacts in this collection include a 1937 Chicago Bears program signed by nineteen including Clarke Hinkle, Don Hutson, Arnie Herber and Schammel himself. Program shows definite wear, but autographs are still very strong. An ancient playbook, a 1934 Shrine East-West Football Dinner program issued directly to Schammel with his photo and embossed name on cover and a few old football magazines round out the lot. All pieces show a bit of wear, but nothing that diminishes the appeal or collectibility of this unique and appealing archive. LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/ PSA DNA.
