HSC: 1924 Babe Ruth Game Used, Signed Baseball PS
1924 Babe Ruth Game Used & Signed Barnstorming Baseball. Though Major League Baseball had still spread no further west than the Mississippi River in 1924, the Babe and fellow Yankees Hall of Famer Bob Meusel continued to act as ambassadors of the sport there in the weeks following the close of the season. This exciting sphere derives from the October 19th stop on their 1924 tour, where each headed a squad of local semi-professionals before a crowd of 9,000 fans in Seattle. Ruth, eager to give the teeming crowd its money's worth, batted both fourth and ninth in his line-up, and deposited no fewer than three blasts over the right field wall. The first cleared the adjacent gas station; the third and longest landed in a nearby carrot patch.

We'd like to imagine that this "Draper & Maynard Official League Ball" represents one of the Bambino's west coast dingers, and it's certainly not outside of the realm of possibility. Though Ruth further endeared himself to the local population by tossing signed baseballs into the crowd from the downtown roof of The Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper offices after the game, it's clear from the fading box score and line-ups written by a fan on the side panels that this baseball is from the ballpark itself, and it shows tremendous use from the event. Among the text that is still readily legible are notations like "Played at Seattle, Sunday Oct. 19, 1924," and "Home Runs: Ruth 3, Hyatt 1, Meusel 1."

Saving the best for last, we come to the fine sweet spot signature from the man of the hour, with the classic and highly desirable pre-1928 signature still bearing the quotation marks around Ruth's famous nickname. It rates a very respectable 6 to 7/10, a couple of points better than his buddy Bob Meusel, who still remains entirely legible on the side panel. LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/ PSA DNA.
