HSC: 1916 Boston Red Sox with Babe Ruth Lantern S
1916 Boston Red Sox Pitching Staff with Ruth Lantern Slide. This thrilling relic of the silent movie era represents one of the few surviving vintage photographic images of the great Bambino with the most famous Red Sox pitching staff ever. In fact, the sale of a trimmed and somewhat damaged wire photo in the summer of 2004 for over $2,800 represents the last such offering of the past few years at auction, while team photos from the era have recently seen the hammer fall at over $6,000. For the uninitiated, the lantern slide is a glass photographic transparency typically projected onto silent movie screens before the feature played. Many advertised various products and services of the day, while others, like the one offered here, served as a predecessor to the theater newsreel. The white border of the photographic image notes that this image was produced by the "American Press Association, 224 West 39th St., New York City." The image itself is crystal clear, and could certainly be used both to produce high-quality photographic images and for projection against a screen or wall with proper equipment. A boyish Babe stands second from the right, above text reading, "On this quintet of twirlers Manager Carrigan places burden of carrying Red Sox successfully through the big series. Left to right, Foster, Mays, Shore, Ruth and Leonard. Shown Through Courtesy of First National Bank." Condition is a remarkable NRMT, with only the slightest touch of wear to the paper edging to show its advanced age. An exceptional, museum quality piece.
