HSC: 1912 Jack Johnson vs. Jim Flynn Glass Plate
1912 Jack Johnson vs. Jim Flynn Glass Plate Negatives by Dana Lot of 6. With Johnson experiencing a great renewal in his already considerable collecting appeal in the wake of the recent PBS Ken Burns special "Unforgivable Blackness," interest in this amazing find is sure to be intense. These six one-of-a-kind photographic glass plate negatives played silent witness to the charismatic Heavyweight Champ's sixth title defense, a ninth round knockout victory over "Fireman" Jim Flynn at Las Vegas, New Mexico. All are the work of the great Percy Dana, the photographer famous for his widely regarded coverage of the 1910 meeting of Jack Johnson and Jim Jefferies in Reno, and one bears his unique stamp. Four of the six images capture the highly controversial boxing legend between the ring ropes that day, with the balance seeming to have been shot in the days surrounding the bout. With vintage prints of this match all but unknown in the hobby, the appearance of original negatives from the fight is simply astounding. Surely none other could possibly exist. All remain in fantastic, undamaged condition, and could still be used to create crystal-clear photographic images of almost unlimited size today. Each is 3.25x4.25" in size.
