1909 Johnson vs. Ketchel Original Photographs Lot of 3. Immediately after Jack Johnson won the Heavyweight Championship from Tommy Burns in Sydney, Australia, the nation mobilized to find a white contender who could win back the title. One of the most prominent challengers to throw down the gauntlet was Stanley Ketchel, a fierce middleweight known as "The Michigan Assassin." But, for undisclosed reasons, a secret bargain was struck before the fight that no knockdowns should occur. The plan went as followed with the bigger and taller Johnson dominating the fight, until the twelfth round. From out of nowhere Ketchel unleashed a right hand that sent Johnson to the canvas. Clearly shaken, Johnson shook his head and regained his feet. Then, like a flash of lightning, Johnson struck Ketchel with a blow so hard that the momentum caused him to stumble over the prostrate fighter. When Johnson regained his feet, he stood in the corner and brushed the surface of his glove to remove the teeth that were embedded in the leather. Stanley barely moved as he was being counted out. Swift retribution for a gamble that almost paid off. Offered in this lot are three outstanding original photos from this bout. One is the pre-fight, the next is during the fight and the third shows the knockout. Each shows edge wear, but the image areas remain unobstructed and clear. LOA from Craig Hamilton/ JO Sports.
