HSC: 1890 Players League Program. Exceptionally R
1890 Players League Program. Born from a revolt over the reserve clause, a renegade group of ballplayers followed the lead of Hall of Fame New York Giant John Montgomery Ward and broke their contracts to form The Players League. The athletes believed that this new paradigm would result in higher wages, but the League went bankrupt after a single season. To say that pieces from this failed experiment are rare would be a gross understatement. Consider how tough it is to find artifacts from the 1914-15 Federal League, and then multiply the degree of difficulty by one hundred, and we may be in the ballpark. Compounding its massive collecting appeal is its remarkable, undamaged EX-MT+ condition, and the appearance in the pencil-notated center scorecard of such early baseball luminaries as Buck Ewing, Roger Connor and Hugh Duffy. Cover reads, "Keefe Official Players League Ball Score Card, New York Brotherhood League" (an alternate league name). A top-quality piece for the seriously advanced early baseball collector.
