1888 Old Judge N173 Cabinet Cards Advertising Piece. Exceptionally scarce advertising piece promotes the collecting of this most popular of nineteenth century issues, the coveted Old Judge cabinet card that featured such early legends as Brouthers, Radbourne and King Kelly. Constructed in the delightful Victorian style that dominated trade card design in the closing years of the 1800's, the piece pairs splendid lithography and a die-cut shape to create an artifact with tremendous visual appeal. The die-cut umbrella design of the front of this folded card opens to reveal a colored two-panel story in which a young boy is beaten with a switch for bringing his father a brand of tobacco other than Old Judge. He rubs his sore bottom in the second panel as he implores the local tobacconist, "Say B-B-Boss Gimme Old Judge An No Foolin This Time." The back of the card reveals the advertisement for the celebrated cabinet cards, and while a small portion of the text has been lost to scrapbook removal, we can still read "Base Ball Players. You Can Easily Get Them. You will find a printed Slip in every box of Old Judge or Gypsy Queen Cigarettes you buy. On return to us of 25 of these Slips, or 25 Covers of Boxes in which no slips have been packed, we will mail you (prepaid) an elegant Cabinet Photograph, handsomely mounted, of any Base Ball Player, in club uniform, you may select from our printed editions." Minor paper loss on this back side and the expected wear along the card's fold line are the only issues of condition worth noting, and the piece displays tremendously well despite these minor faults. It's a piece that is certain to turn quite a few heads in the 19th century hobbyist community, and will set one collection well ahead of its counterparts.
