HOWELL COBB: (1815 - 1868) Confederate major general who originally urged loyalty to the Union, but upon Lincoln's election obtained a Confederate commission and led forces at Antietam and in Georgia. War-date D S. "Howell Cobb" on "Headquarters Georgia State Guard" letterhead, 1p. 4to., Atlanta, Sept. 15, 1863, sending a transcription of a telegram from Samuel Cooper requesting that Cobb assist Capt. R. J. Hallett in his new duties as assistant adjutant general. Along with a partly-printed D.S. "R. J. Hallett" on CSA official form, 1p. large 8vo., Atlanta, Nov. 12, 1863, concerning the commutation of quarters at that city for Capt. Hallett. Hallett's document is very light, the Cobb document is just a bit light, but entirely legible, with a darker signature. Two pieces. $400-600
