HOWARD R. HUGHES: (1905 - 1976) American industrialist and aviator, an eccentric billionaire who controlled RKO, founded the Hughes Tool Corp., and built and flew the enormous airplane "Spruce Goose". An historic, most important document, being Hughes' official permission from the City of New York to undertake what would become his historic flight around the world, signed by Hughes just four days before his famous flight! The typed mimeographed document, 1p. 4to., July 7, 1938, reads in part: "...Whereas, the City of New York...has permitted me/us to make an aircraft flight or flights from said Floyd Bennett Field, which flights are to be undertaken at our/my own risk and on our/my own responsibility...I/we do hereby agree to indemnify [New York City]...for any injuries or damages that may occur to persons or property...as a result of said flights or take-offs...regardless of how such injury or death may occur, whether while engaged in a flight or attempted flight or by reason of our being on said Floyd Bennett Field...". Boldly signed "Howard R. Hughes" with a large signature at bottom, with signatures of two witnesses also affixed to the document. Very good to fine condition. In 1933 Wiley Post undertook his sensational solo flight around the world in 7 days, 18 hours, and 49 1/2 minutes. In 1938 Hughes bought a new Lockheed, stripped it to its shell and started redesigning and rebuilding the plane. On July 10, 1938, at 7:19pm and 13 seconds, the "New York World's Fair, 1939", took off from Floyd Bennett Field, circled the globe and reduced Post's record to 3 days, 19 hours, and 8 minutes. Hughes was immediately catapulted to international celebrity, and cemented his place in aviation history. $2,500-3,500
