HOWARD, JOHN
(1752 - 1827) American politician and patriot, member of the Continental Congress and Governor of Maryland. Fine content A.L.S. ""J. E. Howard"" 2pp. 4to., Baltimore, Aug. 13, 1785, to John Pierce, Esq., regarding Baron de Kalb's use of funds during the Revolution. In part: ""...I have delayed answering yours of the 14th July expecting to be able to give you some information respecting the expenditure of the money received from Baron de Kalb...More than that the Baron was known to have a large sum of money in his Hand for the purpose of marching the troops to the Southward, &...Capt. Marbury Quarter Master for the detachment, received part of it for...his department...I think from considering the circumstances of the Army that a small part of the money could have been expended..."". French general Johan Kalb offered his services to the Continental Congress and served as a major general in the Continental Army, serving with Washington in Valley Forge. Tipped to another sheet, boldly written and very good.
