DS, "Howard R Hughes Pres", 17 separate pages, July 12, 1932, legal folio, agreement between The Caddo Company and director Howard W Hawks, whereby Hawks agrees to an employment contract. In small part, "...The Producer [Hughes] is engaged in the production of motion pictures; The Artist [Hawks] represents that the services to be performed by him are...of a special, unique...character...that he is and shall continue to be proficient in the direction and supervision of the production of motion pictures...A contract was heretofore entered into...which...the Artist claims was breached...The parties are...desirious of entering into a new and different agreement...THEREFORE...the Producer does hereby engage and employ the Artist...as a director...contract shall commence June 27, 1932, and continue for the period of two (2) years...Three Thousands Dollars ($3,000.00) per week...the Artist may be loaned by the Producer to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer...The Artist shall have the right to approve...the story which he shall be required to direct...The Artist agrees to conduct himself...with due regard to public convention and morals...he will not become involved in any scandal..." There is one holographic change to the contract, initialed by both men. It was in 1932 that Howard Hughes produced his famous gangster film, "Scarface", which dramatizes the rise and fall of a mobster. It was the first major gangster movie made in Hollywood and the original version of the De Palma/Pacino 1983 release. This contract does not mention "Scarface" specifically. However, it was the only production that Hughes and Hawks worked on together in 1932. Also signed by Hawks, who directed movies from the 1920s to the 1970s, and was given an honorary Academy Award in 1975. 2 file holes at top margin, o/w VG. $4,000-6,000
