HOWARD ( Gorges Edmond ). The Siege of Tamor. A tragedy. The second edition. Dublin : Printed by S. Powell, for Elizabeth Lynch, bookseller, in Skinner-Row, 1773Pages (4), vi, (1), vi-viii, 71, (1, blank), 12mo, recent wrapper : extreme upper outer corner of one leaf torn off just touching page numerals only, otherwise a very good to nice copy. Uncommon edition : ESTC locating copies at BFp, L, D / Dfo, PPL and NjP. Stratmas 2434. Howard, notwithstanding his professional standing and secure income, harboured high literary ambitions. Since youth he had written verse and plays. The former ploddingly celebrated his contemporaries. The latter included The Siege of Tamor, which celebrated early Irish resistance to Danish invaders. A similar theme of true liberty challenged but preserved animated Almeyda. Neither succeeded, although he entreated his acquaintance Edmund Burke to help have them staged. Burke apparently shared the generally low opinion of their merits, and failed to respond to the Irish patriotism of The Siege of Tamor. Howard's persistence made him the butt of Dublin satirists … Although he had hoped to achieve lasting fame for his literary inventions, Howard's enduring legacy is in his detailed analyses of law, revenue, and administrative practice in mid-18C Ireland (ODNB).ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) HOLCROFT ( Thomas ).
