HOUSTON, SAM
(1793 - 1863) American soldier and politician, defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto and became first president of the Republic of Texas. Good content A.L.S. "Sam Houston" as Governor, 1p. 4to., Austin, Feb. 12, 1861 "To the Officer Commanding Fort Mason Texas", in part: "…I have to request that you will pay a compliment to the State, by granting to Dr. Francis Moone State Geologist, such an escort as he may need, on his present tour of exploration. This request I am happy to make of you in accordance, with our State Laws…". He then apologizes for forgetting the name of the officer commanding Fort Mason: "…as I have not had the pleasure of knowing who is in Command at Fort Mason!…". A few tiny foxed spots beneath signature, light toning at folds, else very good.
