HORSTMANN MODEL 1860 STAFF & FIELD OFFICERS’ SWORD WITH SCABBARD. Saber is marked on ricasso “Horstmann/PHILA.”. Blade is etched on reverse side with floral decorations, a portrait of Grant, a standing soldier, and the letters “S.V.” as well as the date “1861-65”. The obverse side of the blade is etched with very similar floral decorations with a naval soldier, an eagle with a ribbon inscribed “E. Pluribus Unum”, as well as the letters “CFL”. The grip is covered with black fish skin that is wound with gilded ornamental wire. All parts of the hilt are brass gilded. The pommel is decorated with an eagle on the obverse and a shield on the reverse. Pommel cap is decorated with leaves and berries. The center of the knuckle-bow is decorated with cannons on the obverse and leaves and berries on the reverse. The single counter-guard on the obverse side is decorated with an American military shield depicting a sailor and a soldier. Sword and scabbard are in excellent condition. Overall length: 35.5”. Blade length: 30”.
