(HORSESHOE FROM THE CUSTER BATTLEFIELD)
90. (HORSESHOE FROM THE CUSTER BATTLEFIELD) A rare relic recovered from the site of Custer's "Last Stand" on the Little Big Horn, an iron mule show with one nail attached to a linen backing with descriptive note, all set into a wood frame. The note of provenance reads: "This horseshoe was found on water ravine, Benteen-Reno Hill, near boundary fence in 1976 by Mr. Hank Weibert. The land is owned by Gilbert Bird-in-Hand, a Crow Indian. JOHN M. CARROLL COLLECTION". The Benteen-Reno Hill was the site of fierce battle: as Reno began his charge down the valley of the Little Big Horn, Custer moved his command north along the east bank of the river toward the bluffs that commanded that stream. About 1 1/2 miles north of his stop at the North Fork of Reno Creek, Custer stopped his command and climbed to a high point which overlooked the valley below, now known to be Reno Hill. It was here that Custer first realized the size of the Indian forces before him, and the gravity of the situation. A terrific relic for display! $300-500
