The top of this fireplace ash shovel is a powerful rendering of a horse's head and neck. It has a dark, rich patina; this is why I can't tell if it is bronze or brass. It is quite heavy. The shaft is also a dark metal with reddish undertones (maybe copper?). The ash scoop seems to be the same metal. When I look closely at the base of the shaft where it fastens to the scoop, the metalwork looks primitive (versus perfectly uniform), suggesting to me (a novice) that this may have been handcrafted or forged. The scoop is almost black with age. This is a beautiful item.
