HORACE GREELEY: (1811 - 1872) American journalist and founder of the New York Tribune which advocated abolition, and universal amnesty and suffrage. Greeley also posted bail for Jefferson Davis. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., New York, Dec. 11, 1859 to D.C. Stewart of Indianapolis. He writes in part: "...I have repeatedly tried to lecture in Indianapolis, but always met some obstruction. This winter, accorded I can get away at all, I [would]... do it. But I think I have already received the invitation from your city and accepted it though I have not been able...to lay my hand on the letter. You probably know if there is another course in progress...besides your own..." Usual folds, otherwise very good. $50-75
