HOOVER, HERBERT C.
(1874 - 1964) 34th President of the United States whose attempts to reverse the course of the Great Depression led to his defeat at the polls by Franklin D. Roosevelt. I.S.P. 10 1/4"" x 13 1/4"" b/w, chest-up view of Hoover, inscribed and signed on bottom of margin: ""To Judge Irving R. Kaufman with the good wishes of, Herbert Hoover"". IRVING KAUFMAN (1910-1992) was a noted judge of U. S. District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1949 and judge of U. S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit from 1961 -1987. He is best remembered as the presiding judge in the Ethel and Julius Rosenberg espionage case, sentencing the couple to death for selling atomic secrets to the Russians. Judge Kaufman also sided with John Lennon after a lengthy battle in the U.S. court system over whether Lennon could remain in the U. S. after the famous ""Beatle"" pleaded guilty to drug charges in England. In 1987 President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A great piece of American history between a former president and Kaufman, who might have been given the photograph as a result of his connection in the Rosenberg case. Minor bends in three of four corners, some soiling, else very good.
