HOOVER, HERBERT C.
(1874 - 1964) 34th President of the United States whose attempts to reverse the course of the Great Depression led to his defeat at the polls by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Good content T.L.S. with holograph emendation as Secretary of Commerce on his official letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Aug. 28, 1924, to Grosvenor B. Clarkson, in part: ""...In respect to our inquiry as to the accuracy of statements in an article...in the August Atlantic Monthly, regarding myself...as follows: 'Knowing as much as I did of the Wilson history in connection with natural resources...I found it impossible not to believe that the Wilson idea was carried into the Disarmament Conference by Mr. Hoover...'. The only trouble with this statement is that it is wholly untrue, because...I never was aware that world pools or any such policies with regard to natural resources were contemplated by Mr. Wilson...Second: I was never a member of the War Industries Board...So far as I am aware, no question of oil resources of Asia or elsewhere was ever discussed at the Disarmament Conference...[in holograph] If this refers to Saghelen [sic] Island it is a myth"". Slight paper clip impression to top left corner, minor marginal chipping, overall very good.
