HOMER DAVENPORT: (d. 1912) American political cartoonist best remembered for his images of Uncle Sam and his looming, frightening figure depicting the Trusts. A terrific anti-Theodore Roosevelt political cartoon, probably undertaken for "Puck", showing Sen. Thomas Platt and Roosevelt full-length and in priest's garb, both enjoying a good laugh over a bottle of "Raines' Whiskey". Platt was a powerful New York senator who, in an effort to eliminate Roosevelt's influence in New York politics, personally nominated Roosevelt for Vice President. John Raines was a New York tax reformer who rolled back Sunday liquor "blue" laws making it easier for outright liquor sales by dealers to be made on Sunday. Clearly Davenport suspected some nefarious plot had been undertaken by the two politicians. Some black spotting affects the upper-left quadrant, light soiling, overall very good. $300-400
