HOLMES, OLIVER WENDELL
(1809 - 1894) American man of letters; a poet, novelist and doctor who wrote The Poet at the Breakfast-Table and Old Ironsides. Fine content A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., Beverly Farms, Ma., July 8, 1880, to Miss Holmes, in part: "...Nothing would delight me more than to find the spot of English soil in which the bones of my ancestors are lying. But my father, who was an antiquarian and an Annalist of good repute...was never certain as to the first American of the name of Holmes to whom he might trace his family. His great-grandfather was a Pilgrim...I myself have never gone much into genealogies though on my mother's side I have a goodly array of Colonial Dignitaries -- two Governors of the Province and other famous folk -- not least of all Mistress Bradstreet, Ann Dudley as a maiden, known to all the colonies...The name of Holmes is now widely spread in this country. John Holmes was a famous Senator from the State of Maine...My father was not a Vicar...but he was a much respected clergyman of the Congregational Church...Thanking you for your kind expression and assuring you that I have no doubt we are relations...". Mounting traces to right margin of verso, very good.
