A letter from Professor William Ernest Hocking to Edward M. Chapman, and a typed carbon copy of a letter from Chapman to another Harvard-associated acquaintance: 1. HOCKING: Single-sheet ALS on Harvard University letterhead, to Edward M. Chapman, November 13, 1927. He thanks Chapman for a favorable review: "You help me to feel hopeful that we can create a common sense which will refrain from 'throwing out the baby with the bathwater.'" 5 1/2in. x 8 1/2in. Condition: Two vertical folds, hole punches, toning.  2. CHAPMAN: A typed carbon copy of a letter to another colleague, Fred Richards, March 4, 1938. With tidbits of academic news/gossip, his and others' health updates, etc.: "A letter from Page the other day tells of his progress toward recovery... He had got on far enough so that he intended to preside at the meeting of the Andover Trustees..."; and mentions Lucius Baird, Peabody, Blakeley, and others. 11in. x 8in. EDWARD MORTIMER CHAPMAN (1862-1952) was a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1890. Chapman was a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635). He served as pastor of Old Lyme Church from 1906 to 1915. Chapman€™s works integrated his wide-ranging theological, literary, and historical interests. This lot and the other Chapman-related documents offered in this sale were part of a collection of his family papers.
