HITLER, ADOLF
(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. Rare and important partly-printed D.S., 1p. folio, Berlin, April 8, 1941, in German, appointing SS Obergruppenfuhrer KARL VON EBERSTEIN, Munich Police Chief, to the position of [SS] General of Police. The document is also initialed by HEINRICH HIMMLER "HH" beside von Eberstein's new rank. Von Eberstein's involvement with Hitler and the Nazi party spanned decades. It was von Eberstein who first introduced Reinhard Heydrich to Himmler at Himmler's farm in 1931, which resulted in Heydrich joining the SS and his appointment to head the organization's intelligence service. Von Eberstein was also responsible for the November 10, 1938 ("Kristallnacht") order to the police not to interfere in the actions against the Jews. Included in this lot is a T.L.S. by von Eberstein on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Munich, May 16, 1938, in German to SS Gruppenfuhrer Schmitt, in which von Eberstein bitterly complains of an underling's charge that he had been publicly intoxicated and had become ill, explaining that he had a "heart condition" and demanding that Schmitt transfer the accuser. Both items are boldly signed and in very good condition. Documents signed by both Hitler and Himmler, especially concerning generals' appointments in the SS, are extremely rare.
