Offered to the public for the first time is this historic set of silver arm bands with rocker engraving from Rain In The Face a warchief of the Lakota Sioux with the set dating to 1870. The set shows a silver construction being of a large size, to be worn at the upper arm and shows an incredibly detail hand engraved / rocker engraved pattern of a American Bald Eagle with striped US shield at its breast and grasping in its talons / claws an olive branch and three arrows with spread wings. One of the bands still incudes the original collection tag being handwritten in graphite “Silver Arm Bands Property of “Rain in The Face Lakota Sioux Circa 1870.” Rain-In-The-Face was a Lakota Sioux Native American Indian born in 1835 and died in 1905. He was a warchief (war chief) and was among the Indian leaders who defeated General George Armstrong Custer and the U.S. 7TH Cavalry Regiment at the 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn. The set shows a large size with four pieced holes at the ends which would have held Indian tanned hide ties. The top and bottom of each shows a rocker engraved border. Each silver arm band is in very good well-preserved condition with nice honest coloring. The engraving is truly of a high quality and well matched between the two pieces. Only a few pieces owned by Lakota Sioux Chief Rain-In-The-Face have been brought to public sale including the Winchester 1873 owned by him sold in Morphy’s October 2018 sale with a value of $250,000 and the Quilled Jacket also owned by him in the May 2020 Heritage Auction Sale valued at $30,000. This is truly a historic set that likely could have been worn during such historic moments as the Battle of the Little Bighorn, raid on Fort Totten 1866, Fetterman Massacre Fort Phil Kearny 1868, Battle of Honsigner Bluff 1873 and more. Provenance: From a historic Eastern Montana American Indian Collection, where the piece was found to be an authentic original, one of the finest collections of American Indian weaponry and antiquities in Montana. Each measures approximately 5”L by 4.25”W by 3 7/8”D.
