HINDU LAWS
A Code of Gentoo Laws, or Ordinations of the Pundits: from a Persian translation, made from the original, written in the Shanscrit language ... 2nd edition, 8 engraved facsim. plates, contemporary calf, couple of worm holes in the lower margins of the first few signatures, 8vo., London: [n.p.], 1777
Note: Edited and translated by Nathaniel Brassey Halhed, who after studying Arabic at Christ Church Oxford, and obtaining a writership in the East India Company's service, went to India, where he attracted the notice of Warren Hastings. The Gentoo code, or Vivadarnavasetu, a digest of Sanskrit law-books, had been compiled by eleven Brahmans at the request of Hastings, to govern civil disputes in British courts. Halhed undertook the translation at Hasting's suggestion. First published in 1776, this is the first work in English to describe the principles of Hindu jurisprudence.
