HINDEMAN, THOMAS C.
(1828-1868) Confederate major general who served at Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Kennesaw Mountain were an eye wound disqualified him from further active service. He was murdered during the Reconstruction period in Arkansas. War-date partly-printed D.S. signed twice "T. C. Hindman" adding rank on CSA official form, 1p. small 4to., Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 31, 1863 concerning the commutation of quarters, plus fuel, at that city for Hindman and his staff. Also included is a war-date A.D.S. "G. W. Brent" as chief of staff for Maj. Gen. Baxton Bragg, 1p. oblong 12mo., "Head Qrs. Army of Tenn.", Sept. 29, 1863 concerning Part II of Special Orders 249, in full: "Maj. Gen. T. C. Hindman, for not obeying his orders in the attack on the Enemy in McLemore's Cove, on the 11th inst. is suspended from his command. He will proceed with his personal staff to Atlanta and await further orders". As the opening to the Chickamauga campaign, the initial Confederate advance took place at McLemore's Cove on the evening of Sept. 10, but after not receiving the promised support, Hindman and his officers decided to renew their assault in the morning. Bragg's inability to get along with his subordinates resulted in the transfer of Hindman to Atlanta where he would be severely wounded in the next summer's campaign to save the city. Two pieces, very good.
