HILL, BENJAMIN J.
(1825 - 1880) Confederate brigadier general who served gallantly at Shiloh, Chickamauga and Franklin, later led cavalry attempting to destroy railroads between Murfreesboro and Nashville, ended the war commanding a brigade under Nathan Bedford Forrest. Rare war-date partly-printed D.S. "B. J. Hill Col. & Pro Mar. Gen. Army of Tennessee" on CSA Special requisition Form No. 40, 1p. small 4to., [Augusta, Ga.], June 3, 1864, requisitioning a complete uniform to Pvt. David Heines of Capt. L. M. Nutt's Scouts (Red River Rangers). Heines was a very lucky soldier to be fully equipped during a time when the Confederacy had almost nothing to give. Records show that Heine had been captured January 11, 1863 at Fort Hindman, and likely received this uniform at the earliest opportunity after his return to the army. Evenly toned, else very good.
