HIGHWAYS AND TURNPIKE ROADS. Statement of the general laws respecting highways. and turnpike roads ; including the substance of the new acts. Entered at the Stamp-Office. London : Printed and Published by J. Briscoe, 15, Angel Street, St. Martin’s-le-Grand, circa 1832FIRST EDITION, 72-pages, 12mo, original printed paper wrapper: the stitching loose snd the wrappers chipped and worn but still a good to very good copy in original state. WorldCat and COPAC locate only a single copy : BL. That copy, however, extends to page 68 only and does not include the two final leaves, paged (69) – 72 containing “Amendments”. The latest date quoted on these two leaves is 1828 while the latest reference in the body of the work is to “1 & 2 Will. 4” which would date publication to about 1832 – the BL entry suggest [1825?]. A practical guide to the laws currently in force relating to public highways and turnpike roads (i.e. toll roads) is largely concerned with the latter category and is arranged alphabetically, with references to the relevant statutes, e.g. : OXEN. - Two oxen or neat cattle, employed in drawing carriages, to be considered as one horse, 3 Geo. 4, c.126, s.38. The term carriage also included waggons, wains or carts and there was a requirement for the owner’s name to be painted on the side. Complex regulations covered the size and construction of wheels and also the employment of weighing engines, weights allowed in winter and summer and additional tolls for overweight.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) WALLACE ( Patrick M. S. ). The trials of Patrick Maxwell Stewart Wallace, and Michael Shaw Stewart Wallace, for wilfully destroying the brig Dryad, off Cuba, with intent to defraud the Marine Assurance Companies . . . Printed and published by Williams and Son, 1841. FIRST EDITION, pages viii, 294, 8vo, original cloth : a very good copy.Both defendants were found guilty and were sentenced to transportation for life. (2) SMITH ( Madeline ) : -. A complete report of the trial of Miss Madeline Smith, for the alleged poisoning of Pierre Emile l'Angelier. Revised and corrected by John Morison, Esquire, Advocate, with an introductory chapter. With a correct portrait taken in the court. Edinburgh : William P. Nimmo, 1857. With a portrait, pages viii, 184, 8vo, recent paper wrapper : with light signs of use and the occasional neat marginal note : a good, sound copy.One of the most famous trials for poisoning, noticed and discussed in nearly every textbook of legal medicine. The accused (1835-1938) was young and very attractive and so, though the evidence against her was very strong, the jury returned a verdict of 'not proven'. She later settled in Australia.(3)ENGLAND; TRANSPORT; ROADS; LAW; ECONOMICS; INSURANCE; TRIALS; WOMEN; SCOTLAND; ; ;
