***Auction Highlight*** *HIGHLIGHT OF ENTIRE AUCTION* 1928 $500 Gold Certificate FR-2407 Woods/Mellon Graded au53 By PMG. ***HIGHLIGHT OF ENTIRE AUCTION*** Up For Auction is a 1928 $500 Gold Certificate With just around 100 pieces known Series of 1928 $500 Gold Certificates are easily considered one of the key notes to any small size U.S. currency collection. The Survival of Gold Certificates, particularly the high denominations, was impacted greatly by Franklin D. Roosevelt's executive order of April 5, 1933, requiring the surrender of these notes. In very clear terms it read, "Under the Executive Order of the President, all persons are required to deliver all gold coin, gold bullion, and gold certificates now owned by them to a Federal Reserve Bank, branch or agency, or to any member bank of the Federal Reserve System." The ban on gold certificates lasted until April 24, 1964, when they were given back their legal tender status. Though they were legal currency, the obligation to pay the bearer gold on demand was no longer honored. The notes remain incredibly rare as a type, with around 100 known in all grades. The presently offered example displays vividly printed inks and crackling fresh paper. The all important overprint is seen in its original yellow-gold brilliance. A true grade rarity with a few examples certified as finer. This is the first and possibly only 1928 $500 Gold Certificate We Will Ever Bring To auction.
