***Auction Highlight*** 1796 No Stars BD-2 Gold Draped Bust Quarter Eagle 2.5 Graded xf45 details By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION. Up for auction is a 1796 No Stars $2 _ Draped Bust Gold Quarter Eagle, BD-2 variety. The fledgling Mint was spread quite thin in 1796, but even so, it was the first year since the operation began that every authorized circulating denomination, from half cent through eagle, was struck in some quantity. (The next time this would happen would be in 1849.) In the case of the 1796 no stars quarter eagles it would be a minuscule amount indeed, a reported 963 pieces split between the two die varieties known today. The Obverse surface shows even wear throughout, with a soft strike in the center. The reverse, also has a somewhat softer strike in the center, but stronger than the Obverse, additionally the reverse shows significantly less wear, rising to virtually the au level. Both sides display unquestionably original "old gold" color with deeper accents within and surrounding the devices. Only the slightest handling marks can be seen, and no large or distracting abrasions appear. This is an excellent midgrade example of this one-year type.
