"A good grouping of four war-date A.L.S. documents related to Civil War colonels. First, is an A.L.S. SYLVESTER G. HILL (1820 - 1864), as post commander, 1p. oblong 8vo., Cairo, July 3, 1863 on ""Headquarters District of Cairo"" letterhead to the lt. col. of the 44th Ill. Vol., in full: ""The only route open to Maj. Gen. Rosecrans Division is by way of the Cumberland River."". Interesting item from a brevet brigadier general who was killed at the battle of Nashville Dec. 15, 1864. Second, L.S. RICHARD H. RUSH (? - 1893), as assistant provost marshall, 1p. 4to., Washington, Aug. 8, 1863 on War Department letterhead to Colonel Provost, in part: ""àCol. Bomford was directed in [the] letter of July 10th to call in officers especially for these menà"". Third, an A.L.S. ""R. Penn Smith"", as colonel of the 71st Penn. Vol., 1p. 4to., ""Headquarters 2nd Brigade 2nd Div. 2nd Corp"", Mar. 8, 1864 to Col. Samuel Thomas, in full: ""Before you entertain the claim of Capt. Mitchell Smith, wait until you hear from me. This is important to us all."". Unfortunately, Smith did not have much time to worry about claims since he would be killed May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania. Fourth, an A.L.S. CHARLES CANDY (1832 - 1910), as colonel of the 66th Ohio Vol., 1p. 4to., ""Head quarters 1st Brig. 2nd Div. 12th Corp"", March 22, 1863 to Major McGilvery of the Maine Mounted Artillery, in full: ""In compliance to telegram from division headquarters of this date you will report to Major Gen'l. Slocum comm'dg. 12th Army Corp for instructions."". Some soiling, archival tape repairs on verso. Also included is an A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Buchanan, Va., April, 1863 from a one Surgeon Mayo recommending a tent to house disease inflicted soldiers, and a copy telegraph from Major General Rosecrans 1p. 8vo., [n. p.], Sept. 24, 1864 concerning the approach of Confederate Generals Shelby and Price on Pilot Knob.
