GUN BY M. F. KENNEDY OF SAINT LOUIS. Cal. 10 Ga., 2 7/8". S# 2191. Bbls. 32" of dramatically patterned damasucs engraved "M. F. Kennedy & Bros. St. Paul Minn." (Circa 1878-80). Bbl. flats stamped w/ London black powder proofs & "NOT FOR BALL". Bottoms of bbls. stamped "T. KILBY", "FINE", "DAMASCUS". Boxlock action (Bbls. & action undoubtedly sourced from Wesley Richards) features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), sliding 3rd fastener which engages doll's head rib extension & dbl. underlugs. Water table stamped "ANSON & DEELEY'S" "PATENT 2191" (use number). Action has later style rnd. cocking lugs & has nicely filed beads around fences. Action engraved w/ 80% coverage very well cut sm. scroll surrounding scenes of dogs & birds on sides w/ a spaniel chasing a pair of pheasant on left & a setter pointing a pair of quail on right. There are rose bouquet highlights on floorplate. Top of action in front of top lever pivot is gold inlaid "M.F. Kennedy". A setter & pointer are on trigger guard bow. Newly made straight grip buttstock of lightly streaked & figured European walnut measures 14 3/8" over brown "Old English" pad. Side panels are checkered & borderless point pattern checkering is at grip. A gold shield engraved w/ a monogram "E.N.S."(?) is on toeline. Original splinter forend w/ Anson release has borderless point pattern checkering w/ ribbon separated diamonds at rear & incised lotus style carving around iron matching similar inlet horn device behind shaped & engraved release escutcheon. MEASUREMENTS: BARRELS: Bore diameter: Right .768", Left .795". Restriction: Right .018" recess (MOD), Left .045 (FULL). Min. Wall Thickness: Right .042", Left .032". STOCK: LOP: 14 3/8". DAC: 1 9/16". DAH: 2 15/16". Cast: 0. WEIGHT: 9 lb. CONDITION: very good as mostly restored. Bbls. retaining nearly all of an expert black & white refinish w/ excellent definition to pattern. Action cleaned to silver gray, ready for recolor. Newer buttstock retains nearly all of its original rubbed oil finish. Trigger guard originally made for a pistol grip has been straightened. Forend refinished, w/ a few subsequent marks, checkering very competently recut. Bores are bright & shiny w/ some very light striations in left bbl. Action w/ a hint of looseness. (01-19328/MGM).
