HIGH GRADE ORNATE JEWELED CIVIL WAR OFFICER’S
SWORD. 31" Blade etched w/ 17" panels in the style of Tiffany, retailed by “FITCH & WALDO, NY”. Blade is made by Collins & dated 1862. Etching has 2 full standing soldiers, lg. panoply of arms & “US”. Guard is decorated w/ 3-dimensional oak acorns. Guard slightly folds on opposite side w/ foliate relief design. Pommel & integral backstrap. One foliate decorated w/ applied spread wing eagle at top. Pommel cap has a 1/2" oval, deep amethyst cabochon. German silver scabbard has gilded mounts, each w/ 2 applied arabesque jewel decorations, each attached w/ 3 tiny screws. Sword ring bands are decorated en suite to hilt w/ oak leaves & acorns. Drag blade is gilded relief cast arabesque. Reverse side of throat has a lg. engraved “US” inside of wreath. CONDITION: fine overall, blade is overall gray/bright w/ areas of staining & pinprick pitting near tip. Hilt retains most of its original gilt, as well as scabbard. Solid silver grip emulating shark skin is fine as is twisted wire wrap. (02-15025/JS). $4,000-5,000.
