/ HOPKINS & ALLEN SECOND MODEL MEDIUM FRAME SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 38 S&W. S# 5147. Bbl. 3 1/2". 1 of an estimated few thousand Second Model medium frame revolvers mfg. by Hopkins & Allen for Merwin & Hulbert. The top of the fluted bbl. rib is marked with Hopkins & Allen's Norich, CT address and patent information. Left side of the frame is marked "MERWIN HULBERT & CO./ NEW YORK U.S.A.", with "38 CAL." marked on the right. Butt is marked "5147". Sides of the frame, scooped cyl., and bbl. feature factory foliate and floral engraving, with the frame sideplate also featuring an engraved encircled leaf on the left. Metal components exhibit a nickel plated finish overall, save for on the hammer and trigger, which were either case colored or blued. Frame is mounted with 2-piece smooth pearl grips. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original nickel plated finish, showing some superficial handling marks, some spots of wear, as well as some small scattered spots of minor flaking, which is mostly evident on the grip straps. Bright bore, exhibiting scattered spots of mild pitting, while retaining good to strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics, with the cyl. occasionally being slightly out of time. Pearl grips show a mellow patina and some texturing, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Norm Greenberg Collection. (25-4136/MLW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
