HIGH CONDITION 8 BORE DANGEROUS GAME PERCUSSION

GUN BY I. HOLLIS & SONS. Cal. 8 bore (.838" bore diameter). NSN. 28" Bbl. with octagonal breech section which transitions to 16 sides and then to round through 1/2" wedding band. Top flat is engraved "I. Hollis & Sons London" and "Made Expressly For F&C". Bottom of bbl. is stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs and "8" (bore). Bbl. is fitted with steel underib. Case hardened breech plug has some rudimentary scroll engraving. Front spring island type percussion lock with large serpentine hammer has lockplate engraved with maker's name and some scroll, it also has two stamps: monogram "IHS" surrounded by "Makers to Her Majesty's War Department". Rifle is iron mounted, with the exception of a German silver nosecap. Trigger guard with stylized pineapple type finial has scroll on bow and checkered spur at rear forming grip. Lightly figured European walnut stock measures 14 1/8" over steel buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip and a vacant German silver oval is on toeline. Hickory ramrod with brass tip and tail mounts through two plain pipes and matching thimble. CONDITION: very fine, bbls. retaining about 90% original brown. Most case hardening color remains on breech plug. Iron parts retain nearly all of a rust blue. Stock retains over 80% of its oil finish over large amount of marks and dings, some quite heavy, especially on right side of butt. Bore is bright and shiny. Lock is crisp. Big bore guns such as this saw hard service in many remote parts of the world, and are seldom found in good condition. (01-21783/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
