HERZL, THEODORE
(1860 - 1904) Hungarian Jew, founder of modern Zionism. Sent to Paris as a correspondent, he reported on the Dreyfus affair and was soon appalled by the vicious anti-Semitism he observed. Herzl decided that Jewish assimilation in Europe was impossible and that the only solution to the Jewish problem was the establishment of a Jewish national state, and organized the first Zionist World Congress, serving as its president. Rare A.L.S. ""Herzl"" 1p. 8vo., Vienna, May 9, 1896, in German to a friend, in part: ""...Your story is very interestingly written, passionate and colorful, but not for our Romantheil. I am interested in any belles-lettres sheets, as well as short novels..."". A bit fragile, with fold tears repaired on verso, otherwise very good condition.
