HERZL, THEODORE
(1860 - 1904) Hungarian Jew, founder of modern Zionism. Sent to Paris as a correspondent, he reported on the Dreyfus affair and was soon appalled by the vicious anti-Semitism he observed. Herzl decided that Jewish assimilation in Europe was impossible and that the only solution to the Jewish problem was the establishment of a Jewish national state, and organized the first Zionist World Congress, serving as its president. Rare T.L.S. "Herzl" 1p. 4to., Vienna, Jan. 8, 1902, in German to "Esteemed Colleague", in part: "...During the course of the previous year, we repeatedly felt it was necessary to bring our correspondence with the colleagues of the Grand Action Committee to a certain and expedient form. We want to take the first step in this direction by establishing a correspondence book for the members of the A[ction] C[ommitee], in which the incoming and outgoing letters with the respective dates will be specifically registered...With Zionist greetings...". File holes at left margin reinforced with tape strip on verso, a bit of cockling, otherwise very good.
