HERBERT LIST (German, 1903-1975) BLICK AUS DEM FENSTER IV: KLEINER GARIBALDI (TRASTEVERE, ROM) titled and dated "Trastevere, Rom, 1953" in pencil on verso artist's copyright stamp in black ink on verso vintage gelatin silver print 9 1/8 x 11 5/8 in. (23.2 x 29.5 cm) 1953 from the VIEW FROM THE WINDOW series PROVENANCE Estate of the artist, HAMBURG Private Collection, GERMANY LITERATURE John Szarkowski, The Photographer's Eye, New York, 1966, p. 111 (illustrated) HERBERT LIST: THE MONOGRAPH, Munich, 2000, p. 269 (illustrated) In 1952, Herbert List joined Magnum, the international photographers' cooperative. Impressed by the spontaneous street photography of his fellow member, Henri Cartier-Bresson, List soon switched from his cumbersome reflex camera to a Leica viewfinder camera, and also began using a telephoto lens. The first pictures he took with this new equipment were shot from a high window overlooking the piazza in Trastevere, Rome, and were ultimately gathered into the series VIEW FROM THE WINDOW. As the present work attests, these photographs chronicled the daily comings and goings in the square, and demonstrate a greater technical capacity for seizing fast, fleeting movements. Here, for example, a young boy scampers across the cobblestones while trailing a rippling Italian flag behind him. List masterfully anchors this composition with the wheel of a parked car in the upper right corner. This glimpse of a contrasting, stationary object is slight but significant, as it seems to quicken the pace of the running child.
